03Setup

Installing and settings

  1. Install Steam, then install Dota 2. It is free.
  2. Make room: it needs about 60 GB of disk space.
  3. A broadband connection is required to play online.
  4. Launch and play. The native Linux build is used automatically.
Vulkan

If your system is not already using Vulkan, add -vulkan in Steam > Properties > Launch options.

Minimum CPU

Dual core from Intel or AMD at 2.8 GHz.

Minimum RAM

4 GB.

AMD GCN or newer, NVIDIA Kepler or newer, or Intel HD 5000-series or newer.

  • It runs natively, but Dota 2 is built for mouse and keyboard, with fast clicks and lots of small text.
  • Use the touchpads as a mouse, and map common abilities and items to the back buttons.
  • Plug in a mouse and keyboard, or dock the Deck to a monitor, for the best experience.
  • Play online only: Dota 2 needs a connection.

Files, config and autoexec

autoexec.cfgCreate it in the config folder. Dota 2 runs every console command in it at start-up.
Launch optionsRight-click Dota 2, Properties, then Launch Options. Add -vulkan to make sure Vulkan is used.

Steam Cloud keeps your in-game settings and hotkeys, so a fresh Linux install picks them up when you sign in.

07Speed

Performance and fixes

First-match stutter

Vulkan builds shaders the first time it sees them. Turn on Shader Pre-Caching in Steam so most of that work is done before you play.

Upscaling

Video settings include FidelityFX Super Resolution. Render a little lower and let it upscale on weaker GPUs and laptops.

Laptops with two GPUs

Make sure Dota 2 runs on the dedicated card: prime-run %command% on NVIDIA Optimus, or DRI_PRIME=1 %command% on AMD and Intel.

Game will not start

Verify integrity of game files, then remove custom launch options one at a time.

For developers: what Dota 2 shows

  • Linux from day one. Dota 2 shipped with a native Linux client and has kept it through every update since 2013.
  • Adopt new graphics APIs early. Dota 2 shipped Vulkan in 2016 as a beta behind a launch option, then improved it over time.
  • List real GPU families in Linux requirements (AMD GCN, NVIDIA Kepler, Intel HD 5000), not just DirectX versions.
  • Ship patches everywhere at once. No platform waits for its update.
  • Online games need no server hosting for players, so Linux players get the same experience with nothing extra to set up.
