  • Bigger. The map's surface area has doubled.
  • Rebuilt towns. Riverside, West Point, Rosewood, Fallas Lake, Muldraugh, Ekron and Dixie now have unique buildings, consistent landscaping and town-specific styles. The rest of the towns, then Louisville, get the same treatment next.
  • New towns. Ekron, Irvington and Brandenburg, plus smaller spots.
  • New places. A Wild West tourist town, a docked steamboat, Irvington Speedway, a lakeside guesthouse and an abandoned sanatorium.
  • Scale. 1,400 unique buildings and 20,000 new tiles, up from 15,000 tiles in Build 41.
  • Endless wilderness. Randomised forest lies beyond the map edges, so you can live off the grid.
  • The Exclusion Zone was redesigned to feel lived-in.

  • You can scrub grime off walls.
  • XL and XXL trees drop more wood. Right-click while driving to hide their overhang.
  • Vehicles come in location-specific liveries, such as police cars, sponsored race cars and work vans, each with its own loot.

  • A new spawn map makes hordes more urban, using noise for randomness.

Lighting

Light bounces off walls and leaks through windows and doors. Bulbs, streetlights and exterior lights match the 1990s.

Ragdolls

Zombies ragdoll when hit by vehicles, gunfire or explosions.

Music

An adaptive soundtrack reworked from the original score. Its intensity responds to what is happening.

Character sounds

Wild animals live in the forests beyond town · Official image, The Indie Stone
Farm animals

Sheep, chickens, pigs and cows, with meat, leather, eggs, manure and milk.

Wild animals

Deer, rabbits and rats. Track them by paw prints and droppings. Some advanced recipes need hunting.

Raccoons

The new in-game mascots.

Fishing

More fish means more splashes on the surface. Fish flee loud noises for a while. You can craft chum to attract them.

New occupation

Rancher, built for animal care.

Full detail in our farming & food guide.

06Survival

Seasonal farming

  • New crops include corn, peas, tobacco and herbs such as rosemary.
  • Crops grow in realistic time, with best and failure-prone planting months.
  • New tools for pulling stumps and scything grass.

07Crafting

Crafting and building

A survivor using four crafting stations

  • Workstations link crafting to surfaces and devices.
  • Choose your ingredients and search recipes by what you have or what you want.
  • Batch crafting and right-click shortcuts.
  • Melee weapons in parts: handle and head have separate condition, blades have sharpness, heads can fall off, and broken weapons can become crude clubs.
  • Construction: clay and stone walls, new wooden walls, drying racks, food preservation and shelters.

Recipes, levels and stations are in the crafting guide.

08Combat

Guns and the new aiming system

  • Aim at a precise spot on a zombie. Accuracy depends on panic, stress and your Aiming skill.
  • New 3D models, animations, muzzle effects, ammo types and sounds for every gun.
  • Six new guns arrived in 42.15: the JS-14 rifle, JS-3T tactical shotgun, L92 carbine, L94 rifle, MSR7T tactical rifle and Trapper carbine. Lever-action rifles and shotguns got reload animations in 42.18.
  • Firearm loot was reworked to fit Knox Country's history, and guns can jam in Apocalypse.
  • Melee swings can cause muscle strain.

Every gun with its calibre is in the item database.

Faster progress with the same lethal zombies.

Rising

The cosy mode: few, weak zombies and lots of building materials.

Extinction

Will my PC run it?

Build 42 is heavier than Build 41, especially with animals and big bases.

OS

Windows, macOS (Apple Silicon and Intel) or Linux.

CPU

Quad-core minimum.

RAM

8 GB minimum. 16 GB is a comfortable target.

Graphics

OpenGL 2.1 with GLSL 1.2. Use a dedicated GPU.

Storage

Steam lists about 5 GB, but a current install is closer to 11.5 GB. Keep 12 to 15 GB free, ideally on an SSD.

Laptop stutters? Make sure the game runs on the dedicated GPU, not the integrated one. Set it to high performance in the Nvidia or AMD control panel.

Smaller changes worth knowing

Skill VHS tapes

Tapes for Aiming, Animal Care, Blacksmithing, Electrical, First Aid, Knapping, Pottery, Tailoring and Welding (42.17).

Reading

Faster when sitting down. You can pause automatically while reading maps.

Sitting

A keybind to sit on the ground, with idle animations.

Improvised gas masks take clean rags as filters.

Tailoring

XP comes from crafting items, not grinding patches. A fabric roll takes 400 thread.

Power cuts

Fridges and freezers warm up gradually; food in a bag inside a fridge stays cold.

Laundry

Washing machines clean dirty rags, strips and bandages.

Basements

Explosives work in basements since 42.21.

Erosion

Slower world erosion in Apocalypse, Outbreak and Rising.

Extinction

Sprinters run in daylight too.

Occupation spawns still only work in the four classic towns.

Survival Guide

An updated in-game guide and credits screen.

19Mods

Modding and security

  • Only Lua mods are officially supported. Java mods run with the game's full power, so a bad one can compromise your PC. Use trusted authors and prefer the Workshop.
  • First-person mods are not officially supported.
  • In April 2026, 14 malicious music mods were removed from the Workshop. Uninstalling alone was not enough to clean them up.
  • Several security holes were patched across Stable, Unstable and Legacy during 2026.
  • Mods can write .json files, and mod recipes work in multiplayer.
  • Community translation is back: over 1.3 million words in 29 languages.

20Modes

The challenges in detail

Top of the World (new)

You spawn on the roof of a skyscraper with almost nothing, and work your way down through a packed building. Clear each floor, barricade stairwells behind you, and take your time: the ground floor is the most crowded.

28 Minutes Later (new)

Built around sprinting zombies. Kiting on open ground stops working; stealth, noise control and vehicles keep you alive.

A Really CD DA (returning)

You start wounded, feverish and nearly unclothed in a ruined building. Treat the wound, get warm, then find water and a weapon.

Winter is Coming (returning)

Deep winter from day one: cold, frozen water and little to forage. Wear warm layers, use indoor heat and plan food preservation early.

Removed

"Cabin in the Woods" and some older challenge maps were removed in 42.20. "Many Years Later" has not shipped.

The challenge list can change with patches. Read each tooltip on the challenge screen before you start.

21Character

Negative traits and their points

Negative traits give you points to spend on positive ones. Values below are for Build 42.

Prone to Illness

+4. Zombification progresses 25% faster, and colds are more likely and stronger.

Hard of Hearing

+4. You hear sounds from a shorter distance.

Conspicuous

+4. Zombies are twice as likely to spot you.

Slow Healer

+3 (down from 6 before Build 42). Injuries are more severe.

Smoker

+3. Stress builds until you smoke, and you cough more.

Fast Metabolism

+2. Starts with Low Weight and makes gaining weight harder.

Weak Stomach

+2. More likely to get food illness.

Short Sighted

+2. Foraging radius shrinks by 2; glasses fix it.

High Thirst

+2. You get thirsty twice as fast.

Slow Reader

+2. Reading is 70% slower.

Changed in 42.16 and 42.17: Cat's Eyes and Wakeful cost more, First Aider and Iron Gut cost less, Nutritionist costs 2, and Desensitized also blocks Discomfort.

22Survival

Hunting, trapping and fishing at a glance

  • Tracking: footprints and droppings are visible at Tracking 0, twigs and fur at 2, and you can identify deer at Tracking 4.
  • Trapping: six trap types. Traps only catch while you are away, and every trap needs fresh bait. Carrots are best for rabbits, cheese for mice.
  • Fishing: look for ripples, fish at dawn or dusk, and use premium line for big fish. Fishing 10 gives a 50% chance of a big fish.
  • Chum attracts fish, and baited nets only take chum.

Full tables in our tracking, trapping and fishing guides.

23World

Weather, seasons and utilities

A house in thick fog
Weather sets the mood, and visibility · Official image, The Indie Stone
  • Seasons change the weather and decide what you can plant.
  • Hypothermia is real: dress for the cold. 42.20 fixed it killing players too fast.
  • Water and power shut off on a timer set by your game mode. In Custom Sandbox, power can be disabled entirely.
  • Lights only run on generator power when wired correctly; 42.20 fixed lights ignoring generators.
  • Erosion slowly reclaims the world, more slowly since 42.16 in Apocalypse, Outbreak and Rising.
  • The "zombie count before deletion" sandbox limit rose from 500 to 5,000 in 42.20.

Animations

Overhauled animations and a customisable character model that shows clothes and gear. Sneaking, sprinting, jogging, climbing, fence-jumping and collapsing.

Multiplayer

A rebuilt multiplayer system with smooth, low-latency player and zombie movement, and server-side database saving.

Hundreds of clothing items with different protection, tailoring to repair them, and blood and dirt that build up over time.

Zombies

Storytelling

Random scenes: death scenes, prayer meetings, sports parties, car crashes and blockades.

Sound

A remastered Kentucky-themed soundtrack, all-new sounds, and VHS tapes and CDs.

Other

Washing machines and dryers, dressable mannequins, a tutorial, new foraging, new levelling and cutaway walls.

25Build 41

Build 41 game modes and challenges

Stealth-focused, short lifespan.

Stronger combat and a longer lifespan, based on Build 40's survival mode.

Builder

Relaxed: construction, exploration and farming.

Kingsmouth

A challenge on a separate island resort map.

Studio

The Knox Infection hits a film studio, with some unusual zombies.

Build 42 replaced Survivor and Builder with Outbreak, Rising and Extinction. Apocalypse stayed, and is now the canon mode.

Moving from Build 41 to Build 42

  1. Back up your whole Zomboid folder.
  2. If you run a server, tell your players the world will be wiped.
  3. Export servertest.ini and servertest_SandboxVars.lua for reference. Many settings were renamed or changed defaults, so start from a fresh Build 42 config.
  4. Check every mod on its Workshop page for Build 42 support. Start with a minimal list and add mods one at a time.
  5. Update: steamcmd +login anonymous +app_update 380870 validate +quit.
  6. To keep an old world going instead: +app_update 380870 -beta legacy41 validate.

There is no way to convert a Build 41 world. Start fresh, or keep it on legacy41.
