Valve rates it Verified, on the native Linux runtime, with full gamepad controls. Remote Play Together lets friends join a co-op game without owning it.

05Hosting

Dedicated server on Linux

Install the 32-bit libraries. The server is 32-bit. On Ubuntu 24.04: lib32gcc-s1, lib32stdc++6 and libsdl2-2.0-0:i386.
Download the server: steamcmd +force_install_dir ~/l4d2 +login anonymous +app_update 222860 validate +quit
Start it: ./srcds_run -game left4dead2 -port 27015 +map c5m1_waterfront +servercfgfile server.cfg -maxplayers 8
Settings go in left4dead2/cfg/server.cfg. Logs land in left4dead2/logs/.
Open the ports: 27015 UDP for the game and TCP for remote admin (RCON); 27005 UDP is the client port.

LinuxGSM, a free script for running game servers, supports Left 4 Dead 2 if you would rather not set it up by hand.
