MinimumRecommended
OSUbuntu 14.04 LTSUbuntu 14.04 LTS
CPU2.0 GHzDual core 3.0 GHz
RAM2.5 GB4 GB

Vulkan

Add /gldevice:Vulkan to Launch Options to use the Vulkan renderer.

Non-QWERTY keyboards

If the hotbar keys are wrong, add FNA_KEYBOARD_USE_SCANCODES=1 %command% to Launch Options.

Invisible mouse pointer

Usually caused by the xboxdrv controller driver. Stop it with sudo service xboxdrv stop.

04Deck

On the Steam Deck

Valve rates Terraria Verified: the default controls work, the Deck’s button icons show, text is readable and the default settings run well.

Terraria does not switch to a Bluetooth or USB controller on its own. Pick it in the Deck’s quick access menu, under controller settings.

05Hosting

Dedicated server on Linux

  1. Download the server zip from terraria.org. It is named after the version: terraria-server-1458.zip is 1.4.5.8.
  2. Unzip it and open the Linux folder.
  3. Make it executable: chmod +x TerrariaServer.bin.x86_64
  4. Start it. The first run walks you through creating or choosing a world. Later, start with -config serverconfig.txt to skip the questions.
  5. Open the port: 7777 TCP by default. Cloud hosts suggest opening 7777 on both TCP and UDP.
  6. Keep it running in tmux or as a systemd service.
Worlds

~/.local/share/Terraria/Worlds/

Players

1 to 255, 16 by default.

ARM boards

The x86-64 binary will not run there, but the wiki shows running TerrariaServer.exe through Mono instead.

06Files

Files and folders

Terraria follows the Linux standard for data folders, so everything is in one place.

WhatWhere
Players and worlds~/.local/share/Terraria/
Settings~/.local/share/Terraria/config.json
tModLoader data~/.local/share/Terraria/tModLoader/

Copy the whole ~/.local/share/Terraria folder to back up characters and worlds.

07Mods

Mods and tModLoader

tModLoader

A free, separate Steam app (1281930) by the tModLoader team, published with Re-Logic. You need to own Terraria. It runs natively on Linux: Ubuntu 16.04 or newer, 4 GB RAM, .NET 8.

Which version

Stable tModLoader still targets Terraria 1.4.4.9. The port to 1.4.5 is under way and its developers say it will take many months.

Steam Workshop

The base game supports Workshop resource packs and worlds.
